Jamie is a senior in high school who visited her school counselor wanting career planning assistance and occupational and academic information. Jamie has a great interest in architecture, but she was not admitted to her first-choice college, which has an architecture program. Her father wants her to major in a field where there is a demand for employees and where she will have a practical skill, such as engineering or business. After taking she SDS, Jamie learned that her Summary Code was AI (Artistic and Investigative). Full exploration of Jamie’s code was important because she needed to expand her alternatives beyond her first choice of architect. Using the customized interactive report generated after she took she SDS, Jamie explored options in A and I areas, but she also explored Social jobs that require advanced levels of education. Her report also provided occupational options that were projected to grow rapidly and included links to salary information. Working with her school counselor, Jamie benefited from some creative brainstorming about how she could work in the business world in primarily symbolic-analytic roles as opposed to roles that require in-person services, public speaking, or sales ability.
